Plate Wrist Curl

Tremendous display of strength by Arne. No expensive gadgets needed.

A Word On Climbing Ropes

If you are looking for a strong climbing rope, for your garage gym, the golden STRENGTH standard seems to be U.S. Federal Specification TR-605B. The Big Kahuna's at the Cordage Institute set the rules. Be careful of obtuse rating systems.

Some interesting reading at Manila Cordage HERE and HERE.

Look for the Cordage Institute Emblem on their page.

Mcmaster.com carries TR-605B rated manila ropes, search for part number 3825T39 if you prefer 2 inch diameter, once there you should be able to nose around. The stuff is rated for 4,000 pounds, unless you are Rosie O'Donnell, you should not have a problem. ;)

Enjoy the quality and savings, we are having a ball here at grip-central with it.

Tuesday - 10/31

530AM
Lower back/ab warmup

Lower arms a bit sore going in.

Grip Training

Left - Blob50 - Index tap assists, right toe to left toe arcs - 5 singles. Pauses before placing on ground , all reps under control.
New Addition - I stacked 4 pieces of hard drive packing foam on floor, and placed Blob50 on top of it. Blob pressed through foam to the floor. Did 3 sets 3 reps, picking implement up until it cleared the foam by a few inches. NO index taps assists here. NO BOUNCING. Be careful of turning this into a ballistic movement, it's easy to get a boost of false confidence and even easier to get a thumb injury. Being that the implement pressed right to the floor, and did not tip over, I'd say it's just adding barely enough "oomph" to get it started. Left hand is coming back.

Right Hand - PDA Blobette - 46.5lbs base weight. 10 full deadlift singles. Incrementing up each set with Platemates. Last 4 singles with +2.5lbs in Platemates. Quick pulls, emphasize form. If you have a Blobette, you probably have a good idea of what a ball buster this thing is to pick up. ;)

Did twist levering with big 3/4" ratchet handle and Platemates.

Monday - 10/30

This friggin Daylight Savings Time is torture. Fuck the hour.

All joints sore today.
530AM
Close Grip Bench - Index on Smooth - 135x40 225x20 295-3x20
For some reason, NO left elbow irritation. But pain is there if I extend it hard or try the RT. :(

Hammer Flat,Incline,Decline - 2 passes - no rest.
Rope Pullover - 4x15
Abs

I just read the alert for the $80.00 gripper. This is a sad commentary not only of grip but of the fitness industry in general. "Blow torch fat!", "Melt the lumps!", "Grip of Steel!", "Secret Grip Weapon Training!".

Look people, there are NO short cuts. SHUT YOUR FUCKING WALLETS, read, and learn from your own training.

$80 Grippers?

Pardon me, but did I just take crazy pills and see a link for $80.00 grippers with a skull decal? WHO the fuck is buying this stuff?

Gripsters are an insane lot. ;)

The Dino Man Spews Forth

I just read the Dino Guy's latest nearly incoherent blog rant. But I noticed something interesting, he makes the claim that a certain grip guru may have the strongest hands on the planet. He surely got hit over the head with a Pterodactyl egg, to make such a lunatic claim. The inner-circle makes about as much sense as a William S. Burroughs novel.

If you want to see an impressive display, scroll down and take a gander at the Backyard Bastard Bash video. It showcases one of the BEST displays of Blob domination ever demonstrated, in COMPETITION, on tape, in front of peers. No Dinosaurs are visible. ;)

My prediction-You will NEVER see any "Inner Circle" member EVER put it on the line in competition. No more needs to be said.

The lesson? Be careful of what you read. Except if you want to read the premier YORK HAND BALANCING COURSE. Print it yourself. Why pay for freely available information?

Time to pour a Wild Turkey.

New Metal Releases on Tuesday

Sunday - 10/29

7AM
Lower back ab warmup
Outside left elbow still sore. I am starting to think I slept on it, and hyperextended it. Frig. If I attempt Rolling Thunder work, the pain is there.

Upright Rows w/ Apollon's Axle - 123x25, 123x25, 143x25, 153x25, 158x25. Fast pace. This does not irritate left elbow at all.

Lower arms pumped after this.

Grip Training

Left - BLOB50 - Index tap - Right Toe to Left Toe arcs - 12 singles. Much control, last few added a foot step and set it down. Again NO elbow irritation here.

Right - PDA Blobette - 46.5lbs base weight. 12 singles - full deadlifts. Incremented up on each set with Platemates. Finished with +4.375lbs.

Did a pile of side to side leverage work with big 3/4inch rachet handle and Platemates.

Blogger has been fucked up this weekend, so posting here has been light.

Saturday - Part 2

Hammer Lat Pulls - 4 setsx20, increase weight each set. Finished pretty good. Had to stay mindful of left elbow.
Hammer Row - 4x20
Rope pulls - 4x20
Smith Press, Hammer Press, Hammer laterals - 3 passes, no rest.
Light arms
Abs

Saturday - 10/28

Had to get in to work at 5AM for a bit.

630AM
Lowerback and ab warmup.
Lower arms sore. Left elbow pain has dulled a bit but still presents itself when I extend arm fully, with force.

Grip training - Deload day

Left Hand - BLOB50 - Right Big Toe to Left Big Toe Arcs, Index tap assist. 7 singles. All solid control. Last single, took a few steps with it and parked it in its spot.

Right Hand - PDA Blobette - added a splash of lead - 46.5lbs base. 7 fast full deadlift singles.

Did much sledge leverage work all directions, to force as much blood as possible in elbows.

Log Bar Recommendation

The specs on the PDA Bunyon Log Bar are tremendous. If you are in the market for a quality stainless steel bar, that you can customize to your personal preferences, this looks like the bar.

Be careful of some of the bars out there, some are overpriced, undersized toys. Get a tool, not a dust collector.

I'm pondering the Olympic length one, it looks like it would take a lot of stress off the elbows when benching. Also a great change of pace for rows, etc.

If you have the need to get a free brochure with your purchase, just print a few pages from "The Pit" here, and staple them together. ;)

Friday, October 27, 2006

Friday - 10/27

530AM
Close grip bench - index on smooth - 135x30 185x20 295x20
Dumbbell Bench - 3x50
Hammer Flat,Decline,Incline - 2 passes, no rest
Rope Pullovers
Abs

Pain still on top/outside of left elbow. Only when I extend arm fully with force. I'm hitting the Armory device through the day, doing a screwdriver motion. That seems to get the blood in there.

2006 Backyard Bastard Bash - Blobs

Some great video of the Blob load comp.

Idiots Giving Advice on the Net?

We do love some of the solicitations we get. ;) We are now promised that one of the gurus will have fun with some inter-nets advice givers. Excellent.

One of our favorite spammers has sent 18 e-mail ad-copies since October 20th, most of which take an insulting tone ;).

You can almost smell the desperation of some marginal strength equipment retailers. We here at grip-central are eagerly awaiting the promised "expose" of the truly strong.

A rule of thumb here at grip-central, when someone comes a quotin' Arthur Jones, the original snake oil strength salesman, you have most likely encountered someone with something dubious to sell.

Bob, get the popcorn. ;)

Thursday - 10/26

530AM
Lower back/ab warmup

Upright Rows w/ Apollon's Axle - 123lbs 6x20 Shoort rests.
Aside from the pulling muscles, this hits the lower arms pretty hard.

Grip training

Left - BLOB50 - Index finger tap, toe to toe ARCs. Good control. Callous between thumb and index, split. Had it filled with new-skin.

Right - PDA Blobette - 46lbs base weight
1 full single with base.
6 single deadlifts with +3.75lbs in Platemates. Damp weather, surface on this fuking thing is brutal. If your PDA Blobette is like mine, you will know this is Pretty good weight. If you are just starting with it, it may seem like miles away, just knuckle under and get to work. The Platemates are invaluable.

Left elbow has a pain on the outside, right on the joint, when I extend the arm. I may have let the handles go too late on the Hammer Row machine the other day.

Skipped any Rolling Thunder work, it was too irritating on the left elbow.

Worked in a few high rep sets with the Armory forearm thing. This is a great device. Definitely not some $200.00 fad contraption that you will grow sick of.

Wednesday, October 25, 2006

Wed - 10/25

530AM
Chins - A Lot ;)
Hammer Low Rows (The machine where the weights are beneath the handles) - 4x12
Hammer Lat pull - 3x20
Rope Pulls - 3x20
Smith Press, Hammer Lateral, Hammer Seated Press - 3 laps - no rest
Light arms

Entire workout was done at a fast clip.

Death Metal Pick of the Night

The Brzenk Vs. Samuelsson Debate

When the fuck is this GB thread going to die? Who cares about what imaginary gripper Brzenk can close, until he shows up in Milo squeezing one, let's drop it. I don't think he gives a fuk about grippers. Brzenk's at the top of the heap training the way he trains. ;)

As for Magnus, the guy made a career out of flinging heavy shit around, who knows, IF the time ever came, he may pull off a surprise.

Tuesday - 10/24

530AM
Lower back/ab warmup.
Tough to get hands warmed up.

Grip training

Left - BLOB50 - Index finger tap "ARCS" movement - 12 singles.
Right - PDA Blobette - 46lbs base weight - 3 fast single deadlifts with base weight, then 7 single deadlifts with +3.125 Platemates. Quick pulls.

Rolling Thunder - Deadlifts - 105x20, 115x20, 120x20 - Nothing maximum effort. Emphasizing keeping wrist "cocked". I'm going to continue waving the weights up and down for high reps to establish a base.

Fooled with the sledge hammer to cool down.

Monday, October 23, 2006

Monday - 10/23

530AM
Close grip bench - Index on smooth - 135x20 225x20 275-3x20
Hammer Flat, Incline,Decline - 2 passes, no rest
Rope Pullovers - 4x12
Abs

Forearms got sore as workout progressed.

Time to fry some Omega-3 eggs.

Sunday Post Mortem

Lower arms are a tired. Rolling Thunder has me a bit sore around the elbows. Every movement has its nuances for muscle soreness. I may order another one, and rig up some sort of chinning station and also to start working heavy chain laterals.

The Backyard Bastard Bash looks like it was a top shelf competition. Get over to the GRIPBOARD to see the results, and hopefully some videos once everyone catches their breath.

Time for a Jack Daniels.

Sunday - 10/22

This weather change is playing havoc with my lower back. Did a pile of reps on reverse-hyper. And gradual stretching.

9AM
Upright Rows w/ Apollon's Axle - 123x10 173-8 sets of 10. FAST pace probably 30-40 seconds between sets. "Svend Style" as always.

Grip Training
Left - Blob50 - Index Tap, big toe to big toe move. From here on out wil be called ARC's. Solid control. 8 singles.

Right hand - PDA Blobette - 46lbs base weight, +2.5lbs in Platemates - 8 singles. Weighed in at 49lbs.

Finished with 3 high rep sets (20+) with Rolling Thunder. Good pump. Will build base before I start getting agressive. I can see how all the Apollon's and fat dumbbell work carried over though. ;)

Thursday - 10/19

530AM
Lower back/ab warmup

Upright Rows w/ Apollon's Axle - 123lbs-10x10 - Fast pace. Just a few gulps of air between each set. Needed a lighter weight day.
Hands were a bit fatigued after this.

Grip Training

Left - BLOB50 Index finger tap method. 10 singles
Changed movement. Spread legs 30+ inches. Place implement next to the big toe of RIGHT foot. Grip implement with LEFT hand, tap it with right index finger, exert upward force to about 2/3's deadlift height, and place it with CONTROL by the big toe of LEFT foot. Concentrate on control and continuing upward movement. Place it down softly.

Right - PDA Blobette - 46lbs base weight - Full deadlifts.
2 singles with +1.875lbs of Platemates
3 singles with +2.5lbs
3 singles with +3.125lbs

Good speed off floor.

Left hand is slowly coming back.

Oldtime Strongman Library Site E-Mails

Tuesday Post-Mortem

Lower arms and especially thumbs were sore all day. Did a few fast closes with the PDA262 after work, but decided to take a break. Coated arms in Jack's Blue Heat, poured a Mr Daniels, and delved into tinkering with the LVM on one of my virtual Fedora guests.

Just another step in taking my strength developement to its extreme outer limits. ;)

Authentic Oldtime Strongman Site Reminder

Among the most popular here at grip central:

Tuesday - 10/17

530AM
Lower Back ab warmup

Grip training

Warmed up both hands with 1/2 York 80 (42lbs)
Getting warmed up was difficult, especially right hand.

Left - BLOB50 - Index finger tap - 10 singles, good control. Slipped on +5lbs of Platemates for one of the singles, just barely maintained control.

Right - Blobette - 46lbs base - 6 deadlifts with base weight. Next 4 singles with +1.25lbs of Platemates, last single with +1.875lbs of Platemates.
All singles were fast pulls.

Went in a bit sore, especially in thumb "bellies".

Cooled down by screwing around with sledge and ax.

Monday, October 16, 2006

Monday - 10/16

Lower arms sore this morning. Could be the cold snap accentuating it.
530AM
Close Grip Bench - Index on smooth - 135x20 225x20 275-3x20
Hammer flat,incline, decline - 2 circuits - no rest
Rope pullovers - 4x12
Abs

Yesterday I did quite a few "cold" closes with the PDA262 and shiny #2. They seem nearly identical. By "cold", I mean the singles were 20+ minutes apart.

The homemade links got quite a pop over the weekend, lots of good stuff there. Don't let yourself get bamboozled. Study first.

PDA 262 Gripper and some Administrivia

I dug out the PDA 262 gripper. I thought I gave this away. :|
I'm going to mix it in with the hourly shiny #2 closes. They seem nearly identical to one another. Thoughts to follow.

As always, NONE OF MY GRIPPERS have been stepped, stomped, folded, spindled or mutilated. If you are just starting out, and have found our little hovel here, stop and learn.

If you have just started following the Blobette workouts - In MY case, the PDA Blobette is tougher than the Blob50. I had the chance to toy with an Old York 50, it and the blobette are close. In MY case when you get into the 46lbs+ realm, you should be able to Full DL the Blob50. An old York should also see a bit of air. Again, all these implements vary, nothing is written in stone.

Do not fall into the "gripper trap" early on. Block Weights = Hand Strength (John Brookfield). If you doubt me, try and spend a day going about your business, WITHOUT using your thumbs. Or your fingertips for that matter.

Grippers have their place, but the key is all around strength.

Don't come out of the gate and buy every grip toy out there. Especially before tossing a couple hundred dollars out the window for some nutty forearm device. Check the forum sponsors, and for chrissakes look at the sites to the right, plenty of competitive stuff you can build yourself.

KTA will work, just read it 3+ times before starting. Then read it again.

Do NOT waste bandwidth with "what gripper is between what gripper", search and fucking read.

My hands (depending on the tape that I use) are a smidge under 7.5".

Sunday - 10/15

7AM
Lower back/ab warmup

Upright Rows - w/ Apollon's Axle - Svend Style as always - 123x10, 143x10, 163x10, 183x10, 203x10, 223x10 - Fast pace, rest was adding weight and getting a gulp of coffee. This also hit lower arms HARD.

Grip Training

Warmed up both hands with a few lifts of 1/2 York 80 (42lbs)

Left - BLOB50 - Index finger tap - 9 singles - did not add Platemates - Pause at top, set down with control.

Right - PDA Blobette - 46lbs base - 9 single deadlifts. Last 5 singles with +1.25lbs of Platemates. Concentrate on form. All pulls were fast.

Did some heavy lat work also this past week. Went into this a bit beat up. Backed off on pinch to get some recovery in. Forearms play a big part in block work, for me anyway. Concentrate on the "flex" when lifting. After some time you will know what I'm talking about.

MUSIC - Upcoming - My Dying Bride

Saturday - Part 2

Hammer High Row Machine (The one where the weights get loaded at eye level) added a pair of 45's each set, starting with one pair. Rest was getting another pair. Topped off at 4 pair then worked down. No rest between sets on the way down to 1 pair. 15 reps or so each set.

Hammer Lat pull - 3x25
Smith Press, Hammer Lateral, Hammer Press - 3 laps no rest
Light arms
Abs

Saturday - 10/14

630AM
Lower back/Ab warmup.

Grip Training

Warmed up both hands with 1/2 York 80 (42lbs)

Left - BLOB50 - Index finger tap assists - 8 single full deadlifts. Worked up to +3.75lbs in Platemates. Pause at top, set down with control. Remember this is NOT a 2 hand deadlift. Also control is key here. If you are just flinging it up and dropping it, you are wasting your time.

Wide left strength is slowly coming back.

Right - PDA BLOBETTE - 46.0lbs base - 9 singles. Worked up to a few inches of air with +5.625lbs of Platemates.

Played around with the sledgehammers and ax to cool down.

MUSIC:

I have perma-linked the Fightraining page on the right. Home of excellent homemade implements. Take a look at his version of a Leverage Wrist Device.
A lot of ingenius stuff.

John Brookfield's Battling Ropes System Forum is up and running. CHECK IT OUT.

Interesting stuff, to be sure.

Chad Vader Episode 4

Enjoy.

Post Mortem

Lower arms feel pretty good. Blob work seems to be on an upward swing. Left wrist has no twinges. I'm going to start looking for another 50lb blob and work on a double lift. I had an opportunity to get one at the local Y, but it vanished like Amelia Earhart.

Thurs - 10/12

530AM
Lower Back/Ab warmup
Upright Row w/ Apollon's Axle - Svend style as always - 123x1, 173x10, 253x10 , 173x10, 123x20

Grip Training

Fooled with 1/2 York 80 with both hands. The axle work tired me out.

LEFT - Blob50 - 6 singles (Index finger tap method) +1.25lbs of Platemates. Held at top, set down under complete control. Remember this is not a 2 hand deadlift. With the free hand, just give the side of the implement a little tap as the lifting hand is pulling, pull free hand away once it breaks a couple inches from ground. You just want to get it started from the ground.

Right - PDA Blobette - 46lbs Base weight - 6 singles. Worked up to +4.375lbs of Platemates. All reps squirted out before lockout. It has been damp/humid here the past few days. The Blobette is an unforgiving mistress under these conditions. ;)

Stopped here, hit some fairly good numbers, why push. Recovery time.

MUSIC:

Release next Tuesday Promo is pretty good.

Smith Press, Hammer Laterals, Hammer Press - 3 circuits no rest.

Fatigue from the bug I had is slipping away. Groove is coming back.

Left - 1/2 York 80 - 2 full deadlifts
Switched to BLOB50 - Index finger assist. 9 singles (deadlifts) last 2 with +5/8lbs Platemate. Pause at top, set down with control.
Index finger assist - apply SLIGHT pressure with index finger of free hand to thumb side of squeezing hand. You touch side of Blob, NOT thumb. I pull away as it breaks a few inches from floor.

Right - PDA Blobette - 46lbs base weight. 10 full deadlifts. Increment up each single with Platemates. Last 4 full deadlifts with +2.5lbs. Concentrated on form and hand placement. Weighed again with +2.5lbs - comes in at 49lbs.

Fooled with sledge and ax.

What is it with

these people who start off like balls of fire, get every grip toy imaginable, and as long as they are making gains in their training, they turn into "post whores" who offer advice for every aspect of lower arm training. Then when they hit a sticking point, all the toys are sold, and they go into Howard Hughes like seclusion.

I'm sure we have all seen it. They then come back from some mysterious injury or ailment to re-buy all their shit, and start the cycle over again.

I will add that most of those who fit this profile also "Flamenco Dance Season" their grippers and become incensed when their dubious claims are questioned in any way.

Sometimes Grip brings out the worst in people. ;)

RIGHT - PDA Blobette - 46lbs base weight - 8 single full deadlifts - incremented up to +2.5lbs. Concentrated on form and inertia breaking. All lifts "quick". In MY PDA Blobette experience 46-47lbs will get you a Blob50. BUT your mileage may vary. DO NOT PM me and complain. I will delete it. ;)
Also every 1/4lb added to base strength is a fucking battle.

I skipped "holds" all week with the blocks. Need to burn a "break from ground" loop in.

Saturday - 10/7

Cold is winding down. It has left me drained.
Grip Training
7AM
Left - 1/2 York 80 (42lbs)
9 doubles - concentrated on just getting a few inches (3"-5") of air. Worked up to +12.5lbs in Platemates. I have found, for me anyway, getting it off the ground is the toughest. Holding it at the top is MUCH stronger.

Right Hand - PDA Blobette - added more lead - 46.0lbs base
9 Singles - worked up to +5lbs in Platemates. Top sets kept slipping away at about the 1/2 point.
I have a digital bathroom scale, it displays in increments of .5lbs. The Blobette weighed in at 46.0 BUT when adding a 2.5lbs Platemate, it consistently came in at 49lbs.

Fooled with some ax and sledge hammer crap.

Inokuma - Best Judo

This is a CLASSIC Judo book. Use your grip strength for something useful.

BEST JUDO

Bad Mother Fucker Wallets

BMFWALLETS for the well accessorized gripster.

It is Sad

that the MM cert list just about has a pulse. I hate to beat a dead horse, but it is disgraceful. I just looked at someone's log and they are "tripling" a new Elite? I won't waste any time citing other examples, you can peruse the rest of the nonsense from others, but as someone else said - "put the fuck up or shutup".

I'm going to fry some Omega-3 eggs, it may help my mood.

Friday - 10/6

Still hacking.

New TV

Well the TV died. I went up Sam's Club and picked up the $699.00 32inch Vizio LCD. So far I'm digging it. Plenty of inputs, good picture and the price is unbeatable.

I'm going to pop in the John Brookfield DVD, then the forever classic Re-Animator.

Seasoning Thread

Excellent gripper seasoning thread over the GB now. It is hilarious to see some justify stomping a defenseless gripper into submission. I love the rationale - "Is it me getting stronger, or the gripper getting weaker?", "I bought a #3 but I got an Elite", "I need my gripper to be consistent.", "I pooped a tape recorder", well anyway.

This rationalization masturbation is pathetic.

And some wonder why Ironmind switched to "Out of The Package Certifications". :)

Howabouthis, workout, stop your fucking whining, and get stronger. ;)

Post-Mortem

I've been hitting the #2 closes a few times an hour and working in one set of the Armory Forearm Blaster each hour. I'm using two pair of bands. Doing 20-30 reps. Nothing to failure, but there is a bit of effort. It works pretty good. For 20 bucks, I don't think you can go wrong.

I'm using it and the #2 closes more for recovery. After a couple of weeks I will toss on another pair of bands and see where that goes.

Monday - 10/2

Still sick but improving.
530AM

Closing thoughts:

Why have a Toll Free 800 phone number and man it 9 hours per week, and have a 24 hour TOLL charge number to call for orders the rest of the time? "Hello Friend" land seems a bit confused at times. ;)

Sunday - 10/1

This cold has knocked my dick off, but went ahead anyway.

Upright Rows w/ Apollon's Axle - 123x10 178-8setsx10

Grip Training

Left - 1/2 York 80 (42lbs) - 10 DL singles +5lbs Platemates
Right - PDA Blobette (45.5lbs base) - 10 DL singles with +1.25lbs Platemates

Apollon's work had thumb pads blown up.

Still a little "twinge" in right shoulder when doing the deadlifts.

Overall base block strength is slowly but steadily coming up.

Relax rest of day. Need to shake this thing.
