Support Groups and Other Observations

Over the past 6 months or so it seems that both major forums are drifting away from real training info and turning into "gripper support group" forums.

It is good to see the "flash in the pans" go on a gripper tear, then hit a down spell, and proceed to sell all their grip stuff. - Good riddance. ;)

The whining about "gripper ratings" is truly getting irritating. Use what you have. When you close it you will be stronger. Simple?

What the fuk is all the "thick bar" debate for competition? Everything to be 1 inch? It is more an exercise in pain control than true grip. Especially that fuking "vertical bar". ;)

Or the "gripster" who needs constant reinforcement from the group and who has to make it known in every thread what gripper he has closed.

The "record keeper's" need to remind others about what grippers everyone else has closed. Someone spent too much time on their mother's nipple. :)

Stop asking how big everyone's hand is. It is dumb.

If you see yourself on this list, you are at the starting stages of mental illness, and will soon become a burden on society.

World Hand Strength Association

What started as a good idea a short while ago, seems to be imploding. There was arguing right from the beginning. And some laugh at all the "letters" in Powerlifting.

As I see it, we just need some standardized events and equipment. But NO ANAL RETENTIVE arguing over minute differences in "v-bar" seasoning and similiar ilk. ;)

PDA Forearm Device

It is interesting to see the positive reviews of the PDA forearm device. Hopefully some sanity is coming back to the gripboard.

Edit - 3/22/2006

I noticed that there is a review thread on Ironhistory.com and one queued up to appear on powerandbulk.com

The "Inner Circle Jedi's" are getting upset. I noticed this snippet:

"I'm told also manufactures safety harnesses and seat belts for the rollercoaster industry, so they know about comfort and safety."

Yeah, right and the people who built the Titanic knew about building an unsinkable ship.

New Sledge

I dropped by the local Harbor Freight. They have 12lb sledges for $19.99. I grabbed one. It is 33.5 inches total length. I have never seen the mythical 36" sledge in person.

What the Fuck is Going on?

It seems nearly everyday some nitwit is posting an ad for the overpriced forearm device, or some other "inner Circle" crap on the Gripboard. The most irritating ones are probably by the member formerly known as "Polish Hammer".

If you want to learn how to tear phonebooks, the best resource is right here:

Clay's Phonebook Tearing

Don't get duped into buying some overpriced DVD-R. Learn from someone with credentials. Not some cabal composed of misfits.

Saturday Workout 3/4

Went to work at 430.
GRIP - 7am
Tough getting warmed up. It's been damp and in the teens all week.
Eased into some block work.
1/2 York 80 - I pile of pulls each hand.
Left - 1/2 York 80 - used Platemates, then "railroaded down".
Right - Added 1/3 scoop of #8 shot to blobette. It's somewhere over 47lbs now. Multiple pulls with platemates.

There is only a bit of room left to fill. It looks like it will go to 50lbs but it will be tight. 50lbs on the blobbette would be about 3-5lbs additional on the solid BLOB50, due to the slight difference in width.

Called it quits.

Hard Number 3's

What is with these weekly debates about "HARD" number 3's? How in the hell do people claim to have 3.2's, 3.4's etc? I own 13 #3's. There is NO confusing any of them with my ELITE. In reading these threads it seems: 1- Some are fishing for a reason why they cannot close theirs (get fucking stronger) and 2- They are fishing for a reason why they cannot close theirs (get fucking stronger). And where is the 3.0 #3? Is this kept with the government's atomic clock?

Saturday Workout 2/25 Part 2

YMCA
Heavy Hammer Lat Pul - working up for 4 sets. Finished with a weight/rep record.
Heavy Hammer High Row - 4 sets working up. Finished with a record.
Heavy Rope pulls - 3 sets - same weight.
Smith Press - Hammer Press - 3 circuits - light.
Arms - 4 sets various bis/tris - light
Abs
The heavy lat work was enough.

Saturday Workout 2/25

7AM
GRIP
Fooled with 1/2 York 50, 1/2 York 65, 1/2 York 75 - Just Full Deadlifts, and swing around to warm up.
LEFT - 1/2 York 80 - concentrated on just getting a few inches of air under it with 7.5lbs of platemates. The York 80 weighs 42.0LBS
Right - PDA Blobette - 47lbs - Again concentrated on getting a few inches of air under it. Worked up to 2.5lbs of platemates. Then 2 full deadlifts , 1 with just the 47lbs and one w/ 5/8lb. This thing is a solid 1/8" wider than the blob 50, and a tad "slopier". If you can get the blobette to full deadlift with 46lbs, the BLOB50 should go. But your mileage may vary.

Off to the YMCA now.

NO SET PAGE 5

We are edging to 6 pages of debate. This thread should be pinned and locked. It has been degraded into the speculation of the enormous no set strength of the "self-important" Guru who sells the $100.00 rope handle. The safe money says that his name will NOT show up on the #4 list this year.

More "Setting - No Setting"

This week's debate has entered its 4th page. As usual it degrades to rationalizations why setting it deep is the best way to go. But when the inevitable "Bench Shirt" debate starts again, that will be considered cheating.

As time goes by I channel Brookfield more and more:

BLOCK WEIGHTS EQUAL HAND STRENGTH

Grippers are for just screwing around.

Lower arms felt pretty good all day. I was feeling flat with the weight loss the past few days.

Hero Worship

Right on schedule, another "worship" thread of the formulator has popped up on the Gripboard. My opinion? Save your fuking money.

Make your own devices, do your levering with a sledgehammer, include block weights, and finish with towel rolls. Also pay attention to John Brookfield's FREE tips on the Ironmind site.

EDIT: The thread has just been locked. After observing similiar activity, it seems much of the Gripboard is getting fed up with the sanctimonious "lecturing" by the wannabe inner-circle crowd.

Hopefully we will see the end of $100.00 ropes, wrist gadgets made of toy metal and overpriced public domain brochures. ;)

GRIPPAGE

Tuesday Workout 2/7

530AM
Lower Back and Ab circuit
Lower back still "off". This is a big drain.
GRIP
1/2 York 80 - Moved it around mat, alternating hands. 3 sets of 3
Hands pumped up fast.
BLOB50 - Left - 4 sets of 1 - Index tap - move and hold.
BLOB50 - Right - 4 sets of 1 - worked up to 2.5lbs platemate - nice air - big move.
Did not attempt any deadlifts. Needed free hand to hold myself up. :(
Overall solid workout.

If you do not have Platemates - get them. They are invaluable for blob training. 5/8s of a pound can make a BIG difference.

Questioning A Legend

Evidently, Richard Sorin brought his BLOB along to a contest this weekend and 2 fellows managed full deadlifts. And he proudly announced it on the Gripboard. Two "GURO Acolytes" are now correcting him. They are reminding him that others lifted his Blob. Maybe the HALF that he gave away was the easier HALF. I know I've noticed it with my stuff.

The GB would be such a nice place without the douche nozzles.

Monday Workout - 2/6

Skipped today
Lower back was a mess. This is a rarity since I got the reverse hyper machine. But I think the fluxuations in the weather contributed. Call me nuts.
Spent time on the reverse-hyper and some jumpstretch band traction.
Walking was an effort at 5AM. I can walk an move around fairly easily now. Hopefully tomorrow I can get something in.

More on the Legends

The "retired" strength coach recently stated on the Gripboard that anyone trying to surpass Slim the Hammerman was a "punk". At one time the forum was dedicated to getting stronger. :O
