Neck Helmet - Simple Do It Yourself Instructions

Free Plans! Simple to build. Skip paying for some old reprint plans, and get to training!

From SHERDOG Forums:

One of the most effective ways to train the front and sides of your neck is to use a weighted helmet. Of course, when messing with your neck, you must be careful since the injuries incurred by reckless mistakes are very serious.

First, you'll need to get a TIGHT-FITTING football or hockey helmet. Get the kind that has the "double" chinstrap/chincup arrangement (two straps per side).

Go to the local home improvement store and get:

1. a 3/4" pipe floor flange
2. a piece of threaded 3/4" pipe about 8" long
3. Nuts, bolts, and washers to fit the flange

*remember that the bolts will have to pass through the helmet top and the flange, so try to get the right length for your application!

Place the flange on the helmet top so that (when assembled) the pipe will stick up and forward at about a 10-15 degree angle. The finished product looks somewhat like a unicorn.;)

Mark where you will drill the holes in the helmet top, and drill the holes. Try not to destroy the interior padding of the helmet. Fasten the flange to the helmet top by pushing the bolts through the helmet from the inside out. Tighten the nuts on, and remember to use washers on both ends of the bolts.

Screw in the piece of threaded pipe, and you're ready to go!

Use a dumbbell collar to secure the weight plates (standard 1" hole) on the pipe.

I'll post more about specific exercises later.

CAUTION: START VERY LIGHTLY (2.5#) TO GET THE FEEL OF THE TREMENDOUS LEVERAGE CREATED BY THE HELMET! GOING TOO HEAVY TOO QUICKLY WILL INJURE YOU SERIOUSLY! DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THIS WARNING!;)
